Nature: Multi Residential Fire

Location: 34010 Harvard Av Carillon Woods, DE 19966

On Friday, January 19^th, as the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was clearing an earlier residential structure it was notified of a second alarm within the fire district for a multi-residential structure fire on Harvard Avenue at the Carillon Woods apartments. It was reported to be a single room fire at the time of the incident reporting. The caller identified that a reptile tank caught fire and spread to the room.

Emergency response units from Indian River’s facility was the Dagsboro (73) fire company and other units returning from the earlier fire included the Lewes (82) and Millsboro (83) fire departments as well as the Sussex County Paramedics and the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad. The State Fire Marshal was in the immediate vicinity, responded, and reported a small fire in a second floor apartment with sprinkler system activation which extinguished the fire.

Emergency response crews established a water supply with a nearby hydrant and laying 5” LDH hose to the structure as well as initiating efforts to mitigate the incident.  The building’s fire alarm systems were activated, and residents evacuated the structure. Firefighters worked to silence the alarms and shut off water services to the fire suppression system were coordinated.

The maintenance service personnel were requested to respond to the incident location.

Efforts to accommodate evacuated residents because of the cold- weather were considered and at least two unit occupants would be displaced.

The building’s maintenance personnel will coordinate restoration activities.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating.
