Sussex County Stormwater Project to help alleviate flooding near Long Neck

MILLSBORO, Del. - One of the largest stormwater and drainage projects in Sussex County history is ongoing at the Inland Bays Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant. This $12 million dollar project aims to lessen flooding along Cannon Road and in the wastewater treatment plant's irrigation fields.

This project which has been ongoing since February 2023 near Long Neck has consisted in the construction of numerous large swales and stormwater ponds. The hope is that these ponds will help drain and collect water that gathers in the spray fields and on Cannon Road, thus reducing flooding in the area.

“Currently we are overtopping the road during any 10 year storm, after the project is completed the road will not be overtopped, in a hundred-year storm.”, Hans Medlarz, Sussex County’s Engineer, explained about the improvements on Cannon Road.

This project is just one of several major upgrades that the Inland Bays Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant has undergone over the past five years. All of this construction is to help the plant be able to handle the fast-paced growth in the county.

The completion date of this project is expected to be sometime during this upcoming spring.
