Nature: Gas Leak (Natural and LP Gases)

Address: 30013 Marks Lane Millsboro, DE 19966

Cross Streets: Mount Joy Rd/Dead End

On Saturday, January 6th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for possible propane odor inside a residential structure.  It was reported that the propane tank was filled earlier in the day.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility.

Emergency response crew assignments included an exterior and interior evaluation to ascertain the source of the odor.  There were not any meter readings via the gas detector.  Everyone was out of the structure upon arrival of apparatus.

It was determined that the odor was associated with the earlier delivery activities and has dissipated.  All units were authorized to return to their respective quarters.

Information about propane (LP) gas.

  • Propane is a highly flammable gas, and a leak from a propane tank can lead to a fire or explosion.

  • Inhaling propane gas can also cause health risks, including dizziness, nausea, and even asphyxiation.

  • Propane gas has a distinctive odor, often described as smelling like rotten eggs or skunk spray.

If you smell propane gas:

  • Leave the area immediately.  Do not use any device that could generate a spark such as electrical switches, telephones (land or cell), doorbells, automobiles, or other engines etc.

  • No flames or sparks.  Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames.  Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones.  Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire.

  • Do not attempt to control leaking gas.  If the gas is burning, do not attempt to extinguish the flames.  Burning gas will not explode.

  • Report the leak.  From a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call 9-1-1 right away.
