Nature: Indian River Announces New Fire Chief – Steven C. Deery, Jr.
Location: Station #1 – Oak Orchard
Earlier this week the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company recognized the return of Steven C. Deery, Jr. as Fire Chief effective immediately. Chief Deery assumed the Fire Chief duties and responsibilities after Fire Chief Hayden Klingler retired.
Chief Deery has been with the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company for the past thirty-five (35) years and previously served as Fire Chief for 10 years before pursuing other leadership roles in the county and state associations representing fire chiefs and firefighters.
Indian River is excited to have such an experienced and enthusiastic individual to represent us as Fire Chief. In the past, Steven has held the position of Chief, Deputy Chief, 1st Assistant Chief, 2nd Assistant Chief, Engineer, DVFA Delegate, DVFA Alternate, Board of Director, Training Officer, Fire Recorder and Vice President. He has served on various committees such as but not limited to Truck Acquisition, Membership, Entertainment, Accident Investigation and Evaluation, Budget, et. al.
Steven’s tenure as President of the Delaware State Fire Chief’s Association, Sussex County Fire Chief’s Association and Sussex County Firefighter’s Association provides him with an enhanced understanding of the operational concerns that many chief officers will encounter.
Steven offered a heartfelt "thank you" to his friends and firefighters that have provided their unwavering support that has guide him towards such positions during this tenure in the volunteer fire company. Steven looks forward to offering assistance to his community during his upcoming term of office.
