Delaware Fire Marshal urges caution on New Year's Eve: fireworks safety reminders

DELAWARE-- As the year comes to a close and we eagerly anticipate the arrival of a new one, the Delaware Office of the State Fire Marshal has issued a crucial reminder: while fireworks are synonymous with New Year's Eve celebrations, they can also pose serious risks to both individuals and the community.

The Fire Marshal reminds all Delawareans sparklers and ground-based fireworks may be used in Delaware exclusively on July 4th, December 31st, and January 1st. You must be 18 to buy them.

If you are using fireworks for New Year's celebrations, proceed with caution. The Fire Marshal says when fireworks explode, projectiles can lead to eye injuries, severe burns, and even the amputation of fingers. According to authorities, in 2015, approximately 11,900 people across the United States required hospital treatment for injuries related to fireworks.

Certain fireworks are strictly illegal to possess, sell, or use in the state of Delaware. Penalties for the misuse of fireworks or possession of illegal fireworks are classified as misdemeanors and may result in fines. If fireworks use leads to damage or injuries, felony charges could be incurred.
