In the early morning hours of Saturday, August 12th, the Indian River (80), Bethany Beach (70), and Rehoboth Beach (86) fire companies as well as the Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad, the Sussex County Paramedics, Delaware State Police Aviation Unit Trooper 2, the United States Coast Guard Indian River Squadron, and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control (DNREC) Marine Police were dispatched to a water rescue incident in Baker’s Channel area off Massey’s Landing. It was reported to be a vessel that had run aground with one person lying in the boat.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Brush 80-0 with 80 Marine 2 from the Long Neck facility, and Command 80 from the Long Neck area as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
While vessels were launching from their respective ramps, Trooper 2 advised they had located the vessel and could see two souls on board. Both subjects began moving and appeared uninjured.
80 Marine 2 launched from Massey’s Landing public boat ramp and quickly located the mariners. Upon investigation, it was determined the vessel occupants had decided camp out with their vessel until the tide returned.
All units were advised they could return to their docks.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control, as needed at the launch site.
