Arson Awareness Week set May 7-13

The National Volunteer Fire Council and the U.S. Fire Administration announce that May 7-13 is designated as Arson Awareness Week.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are more than 25,000 intentionally set fires in homes each year. This results in 300 deaths, 700 injuries and $500 million in direct property damage.

Obviously, these fires also endanger the lives of firefighters, family members and nearby residents.

Some tips to reduce your chances of being a victim to a set fire are:

• Install exterior lighting

• Invest in a burglar and fire alarm system

• Trim shrubbery or remove excess

• Lock doors and windows

• Keep things clean – excessive clutter invites arson.

Children and fire are a deadly combination. Some children play with fire out of curiosity, not realizing its danger. Troubled children may set a fire as a way of acting out their anger, disappointment, or frustration.

Important! If you suspect your child is intentionally setting fires or is unusually fascinated with fire, get help. Your local fire department, school or community counseling agency can put you in touch with trained experts who know how to teach children about fire in an appropriate way.
