Indian River Appoints Joseph Keller - Engine Captain

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company as well as Chief Hayden Klinger are pleased to announce the appointment of Joseph M. Keller, Jr. as an Engine Captain.

Captain Keller hails from the Long Neck community and resides in Bay City.  Joe joined Indian River in July 2013 and pursued all of his training with great enthusiasm at the Delaware State Fire School to fulfill his requirements.  In March 2019, Joe enrolled in the Horry-Georgetown Technical College in Conway, South Carolina to pursue an EMT Paramedic certification with the assistance of Indian River’s Assistance to Firefighter – SAFER Grant – Recruitment & Retention Scholarship funding.

Since completion of the EMT Paramedic certification, Joe enjoys professionally serving as an EMT with some of Sussex County’s Emergency Medical Service providers as well as volunteering with the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company.

Indian River’s Chief Klingler believes in the opportunity to recognize an aspiring fire line officer and awarded Joe the position effective January, 2023.  Chief Klingler identified that Joe’s educational accomplishments, professional aspirations, and his tenure within the fire company while serving on numerous committees and pursuing every opportunity to enhance his knowledge, skills, and abilities will serve him well in this position.
