Nature: Structure Fire
Location: 24201 Hammerhead Dr., Stonewater Creek, DE 19966
On Monday, December 5th, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82), and Millsboro (83) volunteer fire companies was alerted for a residential structure fire on Hammerhead Drive in the Stonewater Creek development off Indian Mission Road. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics. It was reported to be smoke from the rear of the structure possibly the kitchen area.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Tower 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included evaluation and investigation of the incident to identify source with ventilation via natural and positive pressure fan methods. The emergency response units were reduced to the apparatus units on location with the others being authorized to return to their respective quarters.
It appears that the residential occupant was cooking and left the ingredients unattended causing them to burn and provide an excessive smoke condition present inside and outside of the residential structure when a neighbor notified the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
The residential occupant was evaluated by emergency response personnel and refused any additional services.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.
