Nature: Synopsis of Fire Prevention Week Activities – Long Neck Elementary School
On Friday, October 21st, the Fire Prevention Cohort of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company in collaboration with the Long Neck Elementary School concluded their annual fire prevention program offering educational and safety initiatives to enhance awareness and well as other competitive challenges to fulfill the weeklong objectives for fire prevention.
These child-friendly events featured a variety of recreational and educational activities for all grade levels providing them a chance to:
-
Meet and Greet with local firefighters in a low-key environment that helps build familiarity with the children. These concepts are similar to Meet Your Friendly Firefighter and EMS Ambulance Personnel
-
Interact and navigate thru a simulated house with smoke and fire alarms going to learn and enhance the necessary skills on what to do in case of a fire.
-
Interact and recreate with challenges for hose handling and hitting the targets to suppress the fire.
-
Simulate gearing up in firefighter gear.
-
Learn about fire safety and fire prevention initiatives.
These educational and recreational activities allowed the children to witness firsthand how firefighters and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel interact with the public that they serve.
The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company would like to acknowledge and thank the administrators and staff at the Long Neck Elementary School for offering this program to our community children.
Illustrated herewith are links and some photographs of the activities.
-
These children witnessed firefighters gearing up and then challenging them to interact in a friendly competition to see how this process can be complicated. Teaching staff and school administrators were also welcomed to participate in the Gear Up Throw Down Challenge.
-
These children commenced with a simulated fire drill at the school location and then the fire company offered an opportunity for the grade specific children to see and touch a fire truck up close and review their myriad of tools and equipment for fire suppression.
-
These children attended a school assembly which incorporated various fire prevention messages regarding the 2022 theme – Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape! – which included concerns that it is vitally important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape plan.
