On Friday afternoon, October 21st, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a gas leak incident near 18th Blvd in the Peninsula off Bay Farm Road.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck area and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard area.
Emergency response crew assignments included incident mitigation, evaluation and identification of the sources, and notification of the contractor and utility service provider to ensure immediate resolution. The utility service provider was notified and responded with an estimated response time would be upwards of 45 minutes to one hour.
It appears that a construction contractor was operating construction equipment an accidentally dug up a natural gas main line in the area. The incident was in a well - ventilated area with no immediate issues nearby. The initial fire company response remained on location pending arrival of the utility service provider.
The utility service provider did respond and performed the necessary actions to mitigate the situation.
