Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Medics

On Monday evening, August 29^th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident in the vicinity of the American Legion Post #28 on John J. Williams Highway.  It was reported to be a bicyclist struck by an automobile.  Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics and the Rehoboth Beach EMS units.  All aviation units were unavailable.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines #80-1 and #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included patient stabilization and preparation for transportation pending arrival of the nearest EMS unit, traffic control with the closure of John J. Williams Highway, scene preservation, and incident mitigation efforts.

It appears that a bicyclist was traveling westbound on John J. Williams Highway just west of Legion Road, when it was struck by an unknown vehicle causing serious injury to the cyclist.  The vehicle did not stay at the incident location and passing motorist rendered assistance to the bicyclist prior to arrival of first responders and EMS personnel.

The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close John J. Williams Highway for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
