Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

Early Monday morning, July 25th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on Oak Orchard Road at the entrance to Driftwood Village. It was reported to be two vehicles with entrapment and at least five (5) injured persons making it a Level 1 – Mass Casualty Incident for resource response.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Chief 80-15 from the Oak Orchard area and Engines #80-1 and #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, a Millsboro EMS unit, the Sussex County Paramedics and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit – Trooper 2.
Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, assistance with patient stabilization where needed, prioritization of injured persons, fluid and debris recovery, traffic control, as well as overall incident mitigation efforts.
It appears that a white Nissan Pathfinder and an orange Jeep Renegade collided at the entrance to Driftwood Village causing injuries to six persons which were occupants of the vehicles. Both vehicles suffered extensive damage. Initial responding personnel confirmed that there was not any occupant entrapment and multiple injured persons necessitating the additional MCI classification for paramedic and resource response. The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit was requested to land at the nearby Mother Mary of Peace Catholic Church at Oak Orchard Road and John J. Williams Highway.
The Delaware State Fire Police closed Oak Orchard Road for the duration of the incident.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
