Location: 27825 Sandy Dr Oak Orchard West, DE 19966
On Thursday evening, July 21st, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident in the vicinity of Oak Orchard Road near the entrance to the River Winds development. Additional emergency alerts included the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and the Sussex County Paramedics. It was reported to be two vehicle with entrapment and ejection.
Emergency response units from Indian River included the Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines #80-1 and #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included fluid and debris recovery, traffic control with the closure of Oak Orchard Road, vehicle stabilization, assistance with patient stabilization if needed, and overall incident mitigation efforts. Additional resources were requested from DELDOT for a sand truck and possible arrow boards if necessary. Upon arrival of first resonders, there was not any entrapment and occupant ejection.
It appears that a white Chevrolet Pick up was attempting to enter Oak Orchard Road from the River Winds development and was struck by a gray Chevrolet pick up towing a recreational travel trailer. The white Chevrolet came to rest blocking the travel lanes of Oak Orchard Road and the gray Chevrolet pick and travel trailers left the road and entered the adjacent stormwater management retention pond area.
One occupant of the white pick up truck was transported to nearby medical facilities.
The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close Oak Orchard Road for the duration of the incident.
The DELDOT Traffic Management Section did provide ancillary services to mitigate the oils and fluids dispersed on the roadway surfaces.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
