Nature: Fire Prevention Activities/ Touch-A-Truck

Location: 32628 Oak Orchard Road, Millsboro, DE 19966

On Thursday, July 21st, the Fire Prevention Committee of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company continued fire prevention efforts with the Growing Tree Preschool students:

  1. Touch-a-Truck Tour and Apparatus Review

Touch A Truck which is just a really fun event for kids to explore giant fire trucks and other mobile equipment. The basic premise is exactly what it sounds like – get a few fire trucks together in a large parking lot or field and then let kids explore them and learn about their capabilities and just marvel at all these huge trucks

  1. Learn About Fire Trucks and Equipment

As you can guess, the purpose of a fire engine is to transport the firefighters and equipment to the source of the fire.  More so, fire engines carry water–often hundreds of gallons at once– so that the firefighters can use to suppress the fire once they arrive on the scene. Firefighting equipment can also fit on an engine truck. Some of that equipment can include thermal imaging cameras, self-contained breathing apparatuses, fire extinguishers, fire hoses, floodlights, the jaws of life and other hydraulic rescue tools, and ladders.

An engine truck might contain a master stream or a fixed deluge gun. This piece of equipment allows the firefighters to blast water in the direction in which the gun is aimed. The inclusion of a fixed deluge gun helps the fire department begin combatting a fire as soon as they arrive without the need to uncurl hoses and attach them to a source of water.

Preconnects are another feature of some engine trucks. A preconnect hose line is already connected and ready to use for fire suppression.

Ladder Truck - The main difference between a ladder truck and a fire engine is the inclusion of a hydraulic ladder capable of accessing high rise facilities.

  1. Learn About Fire Prevention

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Test smoke alarms every month.

  • Develop and practice an escape plan with your family.

  • If your clothes catch on fire:

    • Stop what you’re doing.

    • Drop to the ground and cover your face if you can.

    • Roll over and over or back and forth until the flames go out. Running will only make the fire burn faster.

  1. Fire Truck Ride and Exercises

All participants were provided opportunities to utilize fire suppression hose to hit a target, partake in a fire truck ride, and enjoy the master stream from the deck gun to combat the heat of the warm
