On Thursday evening, June 16th, the Indian River (80), Millsboro (83), and Dagsboro (73) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a priority water rescue incident in the area of Warwick Road between Gull Point and the NRG Power Plant in the water. Additional alerts included the Delaware State Police Aviation unit – Trooper 2, the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, the Sussex County Paramedics, the United States Coast Guard, the Delaware Marine Police, the Delaware State Police – ground units and additional EMS units from Millsboro (83) and Dagsboro (73).
Emergency response units from Indian River included 80 Marine 1 and Chief 80-15 from the Oak Orchard area as well as 80 Marine 2 and Brush 80-0 from the Long Neck facility. These marine units were directed to Gull Point / Rosedale Beach Public Boat Ramp for potential launching.
The other marine units from Millsboro (83) were dispatched with one marine unit launching from Cupola Park in Millsboro and one marine unit proceeding to Gull Point. The Dagsboro (73) marine unit was dispatched to the Vines Creek area for launching.
An EMS unit from Mid Sussex Rescue Squad and Sussex County Paramedics were dispatched to the Warwick Road location. Additional EMS units from Dagsboro, Millsboro and Sussex County Paramedics as well as the aviation unit being dispatched to the NRG Power Plant helipad.
It appears that the recreational mariners were tubing in the waterway between Gull Point and the NRG Power Plant when an apparent mishap occurred with all mariners into the water with the vessel continuing onward. The vessel struck and become lodged under a nearby pier dispatching an elevated lift.
There were multiple mariners at the Warwick Road location as well as two mariners at NRG Power Plant location. One mariner was transported to A.I. Dupont Hospital for Children via the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit and one transported to nearby medical facilities for additional evaluation.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated scene access control.
The Delaware State Police and the DNREC Marine Police officers are investigating.
