Early Thursday morning, January 8th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted to provide an engine cover up assignment for the Millsboro Fire Company on a working alarm on Hudson Aly in the Town of Millsboro. Emergency response units included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Indian River assignment was later upgraded to report to the specific incident location for assist with fire suppression activities along with Millsboro (83), Georgetown (77), Dagsboro (73) and Frankford (76). Upon arrival, a single story residence was found to be well involved with high winds pushing fire against an adjacent resident. Crews were able to keep the fire contained to the building of origin with minor exterior damage to the exposure residence. The blaze started at 1 a.m. in the 100 block of Hudson Alley, said Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Harry R. Miller. The home was occupied at the time of the blaze, but there were no reported injuries, Miller said. The home had working smoke detectors, he said. Firefighters from Millsboro, Dagsboro, Indian River, Georgetown and Frankford responded to the fire caused when combustible materials came in contact with a portable space heater, Miller said. Total damage was $250,000, he said. The occupants of the home currently have housing, he said. Space heater cause of Millsboro house fire A fire that heavily damaged a Millsboro home early Thursday was caused by a space heater in the garage, the state Fire Marshal’s Office said. The blaze was reported about 1 a.m. Thursday in the 100 block of Hudson Alley, said Harry R. Miller, chief deputy state fire marshal. The home, equipped with working smoke detectors, was occupied at the time of the blaze. The occupants were able to get out and no injuries were reported, Miller said. The occupants currently have adequate housing, he added. “Fire investigators on scene determined that the fire originated in the attached garage and was caused when combustible materials came in contact with a portable space heater,” Miller said. Total fire damage was estimated at $250,000. |
