Nature: Vehicle Accident Serious

Synopsis: Subject Trapped Car On Fire

Location: 26672 John J Williams Hwy Millsboro, DE 19966

Early Tuesday morning, December 16th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a motor vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Legion Road. It was reported to be a serious motor vehicle accident, with a subject trapped with the vehicle on fire.

Emergency response units included Engine #80-1 and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Millsboro Fire Company Ambulance, as well as the other local ambulance service provider. Additional resources from the Delaware Department of Transportation and the Delaware State Police were requested as well.

Emergency response units were immediately notified of the vehicle fire, one occupant trapped and one occupant ejected.

Emergency response crew assignments included scene mitigation, fire suppression activities with the front hose lines from Engine #80-1, assist with patient stabilization and assessment, immediate closure of roadway traffic, as well as scene and witness preservation.

It appears that a silver Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling west on John J. Williams Highway and collided with the Dodge utility truck that was traveling east on John J. Williams Highway. The occupant of the Pontiac was ejected when the vehicle split into a multitude of sections while the Dodge utility vehicle bursting into flames. It was reported that passing motorists assisted with extrication of the occupant in the Dodge utility vehicle.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the initial roadway closures and coordinated a detour for traveling motorist.

The occupant of the Dodge was transported to the nearby medical facilities for additional medical services.

The Delaware State Police requested the assistance of the Delaware Department of Transportation in preparation for an extended roadway assignment.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.

BREAKING: Fatal Crash Closes Section of Rt 24 in Millsboro

One person is dead following a fatal two-car crash in Millsboro this morning.

Delaware State Police say the crash happened around 1 a.m.; as of 3:25 a.m. Route 24 is closed between Oak Road and Legion Road and is expected to remain closed for an extended period.

Police will release more information about the crash when it becomes available.

UPDATE: Lewes man killed in two-vehicle crash in Millsboro

One person is dead following a fatal two-car crash in Millsboro this morning.

Delaware State Police say the crash happened around 1 a.m. as a man was operating a Pontiac Grand Prix and was traveling westbound on Route 24 just west of Legion Road at an apparent high rate of speed.

Police say the driver lost control, causing the Grand Prix to cross the center line and hit the front of a Dodge Ram 3500, being driven by 29-year-old Mark Bradford of Millsboro.

Police say 20-year-old Andrew S. Thompson of Lewes was NOT properly restrained at the time of the crash; in fact, he was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. Bradford, who WAS properly restrained at the time of the crash, was trapped in his vehicle which became engulfed in flames; he was freed, however, with the assistance of several witnesses and was taken to Beebe Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Meantime, during the investigation, police determined that the Pontiac had recently been stolen from Sunny's Auto Sales in Millsboro.

Route 24 between Oak Road and Legion Road was closed for approximately four hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

UPDATE: Fatal Millsboro Wreck Closes DE 24

One person is dead after a two vehicle crash on DE 24 in Millsboro Tuesday morning.

[UPDATE 7:25 a.m.]: Delaware State Police say a car involved in the overnight wreck in Millsboro was stolen.

Police say the driver, who has not been identified yet, was speeding and lost control of the car, crossed the center line and collided with a passing truck. The driver was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the car was stolen from Sunny’s Auto Sales in Millsboro. The driver of the truck, 29-year-old Mark Bradford, was trapped in his burning vehicle, but witnesses helped him escape. He is being treated at Beebe Healthcare for non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation continues.

[UPDATE 7:00 a.m.]: DE 24 has been reopened.

[ORIGINAL]: One person is dead after a two vehicle crash on DE 24 in Millsboro Tuesday morning.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company says a car was traveling westbound on DE 24 when it collided with a passing utility truck heading in the opposite direction. The driver of the car was ejected when his car split into several pieces, the truck burst into flames.

The driver of the car was killed, the driver of the truck was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

And because of that wreck, DE 24 is closed between Oak Road and Legion Road. Delaware State Police are currently investigating the accident and say the road will be closed for several hours.
