Nature: Water Rescue Priority 2

Location: 33196-33719 Mercer Ave, Millsboro, DE 19966

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a water rescue incident on Mercer Avenue in Oak Orchard. It was reported to be a motorist attempting to navigate high tidal waters and unable to get out of the vehicle after being stranded.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility.

Emergency response crew assignments included the donning of cold water submersion suits, and trekking into the water in order to retrieve the stranded motorist.

It appears that the motorist was attempting to navigate the high tidal water in order to sightsee during the period of inclement weather.

The unsuspecting motorist steered into deeper water driving into a submerged drainage ditch.

The motorist was returned safely to dry ground and her vehicle was towed and will probably be considered a complete loss due to the infiltration of saltwater.

The Delaware State Police is investigating.
