Nature: Wires Down/Arcing
Location: John J Williams Hwy and Plaza Dr Millsboro, DE 19966
On Monday evening, May 2nd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was returning from a previous mutual aid emergency incident when it was dispatched to another emergency involving electrical wires down at or near the intersection of John J. Williams Highway and Plaza Drive.
It was reported that a private contractor was digging in the area and dug up active underground electrical wirings impacting the traffic signals at the entrance to John J. Williams Highway and Plaza Drive.
Emergency response units included Tanker 80 and Tower 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engines #80-1 and #80-3 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included incident and issue evaluation, traffic control for the disabled traffic signal at the intersection, incident mitigation and monitoring. Notification of the Delaware Department of Transportation for an emergency response crew as well as other contractors for resolution.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control with limited and altered traffic patterns for the duration of the incident.
The Delaware Department of Transportation responded and offered technical assistance with respect to the traffic control devices impacted by the power service interruption.
The Delaware State Police are investigating the incident.
