Renowned Writer, Journalist & Photographer Donates Book - Donald J. Addor

Donald J. Addor is a Life Member of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company.

After joining the volunteer fire service in April 1979 at the age of fifty-three (53), and serving the communities of Oak Orchard - Riverdale.

Donald J. Addor was awarded a life membership with distinction for his dedication and diligence to the volunteer fire service and residents of his community. Don has served in various officer positions which include Fire Recorder and Photographer as well as many leadership positions in the in the volunteer fire service.

Don’s recent contribution to the volunteer fire service was a signed hard copy of his latest book - One Foot In The Grave, which in one chapter memorializes his volunteer fire service career.

Don was a member of the military service, a veteran of World War II, and was a resident of Oak Orchard, Delaware in the late 1970s to mid 1980s. Don recently resided at the Delaware Veterans Hospital in Milford, Delaware. Don lost his right leg above the knee during World War II and utilized an artificial leg.

Don wrote in his book that he pledged to be a certified firefighter.” However, he was still an active fireman, certified or not, and answered every call that he could. He also attended the meetings and helped in decisions concerning the business of running a fire station. He did this until his Veronica passed away.  Then he relocated residentially outside of the fire district. At his last meeting night, Don turned in his running gear and radio. He handed the chief (Snooty Mosley) his badge and identification as a member of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company. During the meeting, Don was amazed and deeply appreciative of the fire company.   He cannot put into words the pride and other emotions he felt while being honored. The feeling was very much the same as when after five years at the University of Maryland he walked across the stage and received his degree.” Don continued to write about his time in the volunteer fire service as well as his life experiences dealing with an artificial leg.

Don has impacted many people and touched many friends and family members with his writings, and his efforts to create an American Legion Post in or near Oak Orchard, as well as, his outright community and civic service accomplishments.

Don hopes his latest writings will help other amputees and inspires others with disadvantageous to lend a helping hand where possible.
