Nature: Vehicle Accident

Location: 32980 Long Neck Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Thursday afternoon, September 4th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident involving a school on Long Neck Road. Any school bus related incident involves allocation of additional resources with Sussex County Paramedics required to follow specific EMS protocols.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police and the local emergency medical service providers.

Emergency crew assignments included scene mitigation, assist with patient stabilization, triage prioritization if needed, traffic control and vehicle stabilization.

It appears that a Millsboro Middle School bus was traveling south on Long Neck Road and struck the rear of a Hyundai also traveling south. The impact forces the Hyundai to strike nearby roadway signage prior to exiting the roadway off on the shoulder of the road. The school bus was occupied with children.

The Delaware State Fire Police were required to close Long Neck Road during periodic intervals which resulted in significant traffic issues in the area.

There were no student injuries reported.

The Delaware State Police and the Indian River School District are investigating.
