Charles “Bud” Bonte is both a volunteer firefighter with the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and a paid employee of the American Legion Post #28 and on January 29, 2014 an extremely unfortunate incident occurred at the legion property causing significant property damage and involving a deceased vehicle operator.

The accident involving a single vehicle striking and dislodging propane tanks consisting of at least a 1,000 gallons with active leaks. Bud’s quick thinking resulted in the shut off of the facilities HVAC, cooking facilities, with  building and community evacuations while attempting to fully mitigate the situation while minimizing the damage potentials prior to arrival of emergency response personnel. Bud’s efforts were extremely valiant for the protection of property and other human life while remaining on the overall objective of public safety first and foremost.

Therefore, Sussex County Firefighter's Association (SCFA) Vice President William Henry Buckaloo read the proclamation while SCFA President Andy Johnson presented Bud with a formal recognition and tribute.  Immediately thereafter, Indian River’s Chief Steven Deery, Jr. presented Bud with a formal acknowledgements from Indian River.

Bud and his wife, Bonnie was able to attend and accept this honor as the 2014 Heroic Firefighter of the Year from the Sussex County Firefighter's Association.
