Nature: Vehicle Fire

Location: Near Dollar Tree 25935 Plaza Dr Millsboro, DE 19966

On Friday afternoon, August 15th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle fire near the Dollar Tree on Plaza Drive. It was reported to the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), that a small compact car was smoldering from the inside with smoke visible and a passerby reported the incident.

Emergency response units were Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments were to mitigate the incident.

It appears that a dark colored Chevrolet Cobalt was parked in the parking lot and has a small fire between the seats. A passerby called 911 and reported the incident.

A responding fire police officer saw a soda inside the car and extinguished the fire. It is apparent that careless smoking was the possible cause when ashes fell between the seats causing the seat cushion to ignite.

During the incident, the owner/operator of the vehicle was located and thankful for the quick thinking and extinguishment.
