Nature: Vehicle Accident Serious

Location: Entrance to Baywoods @ Route #24 John J Williams Hwy & Baywoods, Millsboro, DE 19966

On Monday morning, July 7th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway at the entrance to Baywoods. It was reported to be a vehicle accident involving two vehicles, one vehicle overturned with one vehicle in the water, and possible occupant entrapment.

Emergency response units included: Rescue 80 and Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility; Engine #80-5 and Brush #80-0 from the Long Neck facility, the Delaware State Fire Police, the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police ground and aviation units, as well as nearby emergency medical units from the local EMS provider and Gumboro Fire Company.

Emergency response crew assignments included: assistance with patient stabilization, vehicle stabilization, traffic pattern mitigation with complete shutdown of John J. Williams Highway, establish and coordinate traffic detour patterns, scene mitigation and preservation.

It appears that both vehicles were traveling on John J. Williams Highway when the silver Dodge Caravan attempted to make a u-turn into the path of the green Chevrolet Pick-up.  As a result of the impact, the Caravan overturned blocking a segment of eastbound John J. Williams Highway, while the pick-up continued off the roadway and down an embankment.

The various EMS providers transported patients to nearby medical facilities for additional observations.

The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close John J. Williams Highway for the duration of the incident. The Delaware Department of Transportation responded and assisted with traffic control.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
