Residents evacuated from Beach Haven Apartments near Rehoboth Beach

Two people were arrested after a methamphetamine lab caused a small fire at an apartment complex near Rehoboth Beach, state police said Tuesday.

The incident happened about 8 p.m. Monday at the Beach Haven Apartments in the 35000 block of Haven Drive, forcing the evacuation of residents of the building for more than four hours.

Firefighters from Lewes, Rehoboth and Indian River fire companies were dispatched to extinguish the fire.

Police and the state Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire started in a spare bedroom that contained equipment and component mixtures of methamphetamine along with key ingredients in making the drug, Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said.

Troopers were assisted by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control in dismantling the meth lab along with the cleanup and of the waste.

Arriving firefighters found the two residents of the apartment arguing in the parking lot.

One of the two, Eric P. Marine, 37, tried to flee the area but was arrested around the Applebee's restaurant nearby and found in possession of various narcotics, Fournier said.

The other, Susan Trudeau, 54, was treated by emergency medical services at the scene.

Both were taken to Beebe Healthcare's hospital in Lewes for treatment of minor injures and released to police.

Troopers charged them with manufacturing methamphetamine and related counts, Fournier said.

Both were being held at Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of more than $30,000 secured bond each.

After DNREC checked the air quality in the building, residents were allowed to return to their homes at 12:30 a.m., Fournier said.

Firefighters from Rehoboth Beach, Lewes and Indian River responded to the Beach Haven apartments off Munchie Branch Road west of Rehoboth Beach on Monday evening. State police say two people were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine after a meth lab in their apartment caused a small fire
