On Tuesday evening, April 22nd, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Banks Road in the vicinity of Friendship Drive. Initial reports indicated a traffic accident with unknown information that was later upgraded to be possible ejection and entrapment with high priority injuries. The Sussex County Paramedics, Delaware State Police Aviation and additional ambulances from the Lewes Fire Department were dispatched. Emergency response units included Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility, Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, the Delaware State Fire Police, as well as the Delaware Department of Transportation (DELDOT). It appears that a gold Chevrolet Malibu was traveling north on Banks Road collided with a white Toyota Matrix traveling south on Banks Road attempting to turn onto Friendship Drive. Both vehicles collided nearly head-on causing significant damage. Both occupants of the Matrix needed medical attention and were transported to nearby medical facilities via the Lewes Fire Department ambulances. The Delaware State Fire Police requested the assistance of DELDOT for traffic control assistance as a result of closing Banks Road.
