2 junior firefighters charged with arson

Two junior firefighters were charged with arson Friday after a mobile home was set on fire near Rehoboth Beach, an official said this morning.

The fire, spotted by a passerby about 4:30 a.m., caused extensive damage to the unoccupied home in the 500 block of South Drive in the Tru-Vale Acres community.

The two Rehoboth-area boys arrested Friday night, 16 and 17 years old, were charged with felony arson, burglary and conspiracy, said Michael G. Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

He said both are junior members of the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company.

About 50 volunteers from the Rehoboth and Lewes fire companies extinguished the blaze.

The two teens were committed to Stevenson House detention center in Milford in lieu of $3,500 secured bond each.

Damage to the home was estimated at $10,000.

Chionchio said there were no injuries.
