Nature: Funeral Services – Roland F. Walker, Jr., Life Member
On Saturday, September 4 commencing at approximately 9 a.m., the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company paid tribute and participated in the funeral services for Life Member and Past President of the Sussex County Volunteer Firefighters Association – Roland F. Walker, Jr. in order to bid farewell to one of the volunteer fire service's staunch supporters.
Roland was an active part of the volunteer fire service in Pennsylvania and Delaware for more than 63 years and held the offices of Firefighter, Second Lieutenant, Second Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, Chief and attended many committee meetings and events hosted by the volunteer fire companies. The funeral services were officiated by Rev. J. Allen Miller, Chaplain of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company and of the Community Church of Oak Orchard.
Roland’s funeral procession originated at Melson’s Funeral Home in Long Neck, and traveled north on Long Neck Road, turning left on John J. Williams Highway, left on Oak Orchard Road, right on Chief’s Road, left on River Road, and proceeded to Oak Orchard Road, and stopped in front of Indian River’s Main Station where the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center sounded his last alarm and where Tower 80 and Quint 40 paid tribute and hosted a large 20 x 30 American Flag near Indian River’s Main Station. The procession then returned to Melson’s Funeral Home.
A reception followed the services at the AMVETS Post in Long Neck.
