Nature: Vehicle Accident ALS

Location: Food Lion (80) west of Long Neck Road

Address: 24832 John J Williams Hwy., Millsboro, DE 19966

On Wednesday, January 1st, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a personal injury vehicle accident on John J. Williams Highway just down from the Food Lion entrance.  It was reported to be a bicyclist that was struck by a vehicle.

Emergency response units included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-5 from the Long Neck facility with additional units from the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Traffic and Aviation units as well as the local emergency medical services provider.

It appears that a male bicyclist was traveling west on John J. Williams Highway and navigated into the path of a maroon Kia mini-van that was also traveling westbound.  The bicyclist was ejected from the bike striking the hood and windshield sections of the minivan and coming to rest on the roadway surface.

Emergency response crews were assigned to assist with vehicle stabilization, patient stabilization, scene mitigation and preservation as well as prepare for a landing zone to accommodating incoming aviation units.

The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close the entire section of John J. Williams Highway in order to conduct an incident evaluation and investigation.  The Delaware State Police are investigating.

The bicyclist was transported by ground units to nearby medical facilities.
