Indian River Mourns the Passing of Safety Officer - Jay G. Stephenson Friday, December 20, 2013 Jay G. Stephenson, Member of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company passed away on Friday, December 20, 2013. Jay was 70 years old. Jay served as a dedicated volunteer firefighter since joining the volunteer fire service. Jay transferred his active membership from Mill Creek in New Castle County to Indian River in Sussex County. Jay’s insight, desire and compassion to help others was exceptional. Jay served in the following capacities when affiliated with Indian River: Safety Officer (4 years); Board of Director (1 year); Secretary (1 year); and DVFA Delegate/Alternate (1 year). Jay will be missed by his family as well as the members of the Indian River and Mill Creek fire companies. Obituary - Jay G. Stephenson Jay G. Stephenson, 70 of Millsboro, DE departed this life on December 20, 2013 at home. Jay was born in Wilmington, DE son of the late Joseph and Jayne Stephenson. After graduating from Dickinson High School and a brief period in the United States Air Force, he began working in the heating and air conditioning business. His true passion was serving his community as a volunteer fireman. His service began in Wilmington, DE with the Mill Creek Volunteer Fire Company while still in high school. To further his career as a volunteer, he graduated from EMT school in 1992. After moving to Millsboro he joined the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company. Jay was also a 1st Lieutenant in the Civil Air Patrol and flew many DelDot Missions with the Squadron located in Georgetown. He was also an active member with the American Legion Post #28 of Millsboro, DE. Jay was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend. He will be remembered as a loving, caring and giving person to his friends and community. Jay is survived by his loving companion, friend and caregiver Carol A. Goerner. He is also survived by his brother, Craig Stephenson and his wife Susan and a niece Leslie. In addition to his parents, Jay is predeceased by his brother, Bruce D. Stephenson. A visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2013 at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Rd., Millsboro, DE, with a funeral service to begin at 3 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jay’s name to the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, 32628 Oak Orchard Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966.
