Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Medics
Location: 32981 Peninsula Esplanade, The Peninsula, DE 19966
On Wednesday evening, August 4th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company, Mid-Sussex Rescue Squad, Sussex County Paramedics, Delaware State Police Ground Units and their Aviation Unit Trooper 2 were alerted for a vehicle accident in The Peninsula development off Bay Farm Road. All initial reports advised of a single vehicle versus a building.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.
Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, assistance with patient stabilization if needed, traffic control, scene preservation, and incident mitigation. Engine 80-1 and Rescue 80 arrived to find a vehicle had struck a support pillar on the exterior of the commercial structure. EMS units evaluated and transported two patients by ground for further treatment at nearby medical facilities. The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit - Trooper 2 was cancelled while responding to the incident location.
Additional resources from the Sussex County Building Inspector were requested to respond and evaluate the damage to the building and structure. Indian River units remained on scene, securing the area, until a building inspector could respond to the incident location.
It appears that a Porsche SUV made impact with a Lexus vehicle causing very minimal damage and continued onward to strike a floral arrangement and exterior pillar support of the commercial structure causing significant damage and structural integrity concerns.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic, limited scene access, and crowd control throughout the duration.
The Delaware State Police are investigating.
