Nature: Vehicle Accident

Location: ROAD BEHIND McDonalds (80) - Long Neck

On Sunday afternoon, July 25^th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on the service road behind McDonald’s in Long Neck.  It was reported to be a vehicle into a ditch.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police and the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad.

Upon arrival of first responders (Delaware State Fire Police), it was identified that this incident involving a single vehicle striking the corner of multi-residential apartment building causing significant structural damage.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization where needed, commence with evacuation of the residential apartment building pending structural evaluation, request the immediate dispatching of the Sussex County Building Inspector and tendered assistance notifying the American Red Cross for the dispatched families.

Upon final evaluation, the building inspector declared the two end units of the apartment complex uninhabitable thereby allowing all other residents to return. The facility was turned over to the property management entity.  The American Red Cross assisted the families that were contacted at the time of their response.

It appears that a Nissan SUV was traveling on the service road and left the roadway for an unknown reason, traveling thru the complex fencing, striking the corner of the apartment building, continue thru the fencing again into the nearby stormwater management retention area.

The Delaware State Fire Police provided limit scene access, coordinated the initial evacuation of the residential structure, and assisted the Delaware State Police where needed.

The Sussex County Building Inspector responded as needed.

The American Red Cross responded as needed.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
