Nature: Water Rescue Training - DSFS
Location: Delaware Bay
On Saturday, July 17th, members of the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company finalized their water rescue training evolutions and curriculum training taught by the Delaware State Fire School (DSFS) and hosted by the Memorial Fire Company of Slaughter Beach.
These members trained on methods of boat handling with different fire company marine units from Memorial (89), South Bowers (57), and Indian River (80). Some of the evolutions included but not limited to an obstacle course to test their respective skills operating different style boats; evolutions for victim retrieval from the water with backboards and stokes basket incidents; evolutions of victim recovery with orange snow fencing; as well as marina access points and shore points within their assigned area of responsibility allowing the safest and most timely response during an emergency situation. Other subjects included area familiarization, preplanning, understanding weather and tide, hydrodynamics, charting, plotting, and medical conditions that pertain to water rescues.
One significant attribute for these course participants was that all participants were from throughout the State of Delaware which provided unique training capabilities forcing students to become acclimated with each other.
Illustrated herewith are some photographs from the day’s activities.
