On Saturday evening, July 3rd, the Indian River (80) and Millsboro (83) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a watercraft in distress incident off Massey’s Landing Campground.  It was reported to be multiple flare sightings.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Incident Command 80, Chief 80-15, Tanker 80 and Brush 83 all departing the previous fireworks assignment in order to respond to this incident.  Other units included 80 Marine 2 from the Long Neck facility and Utility 80-8 and 80 Marine 1 from the Oak Orchard facility as well as the Delaware Fish & Wildlife Marine Police and the United States Coast Guard Indian River Squadron.  The Delaware State Police Aviation Units (Trooper #2) also participated with the incident.

After much searching in the Massey’s Ditch area, Rehoboth Bay surrounding Massey’s Landing area, Pot Nets Coveside, Pot Nets Seaside and some of Guinea Creek prior to the discontinuation of these search efforts.   The Delaware State Police aviation units searched the Indian River Bay and Indian River Inlet area with not much avail.  The United States Coast Guard as well as the DNREC Marine Police responded and not able to identify any vessel in distress as well.

All units were permitted to return to their respective quarters.
