Nature: Washdown (Fuel Spill)

On Saturday, May 29th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a washdown incident at the Shore Star / Liberty gas station off of Oak Orchard Road. It was reported to be a burgundy SUV that overflowed their fuel acquisition activities with approximately 12-25 gallons of fuel onto the ground.
Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility. Additional resources from the Millsboro (83) Fire Company for their hazardous materials unit was requested to the incident location.
Emergency response crew assignments included incident mitigation services, fluid recovery activities, traffic control, and overall absorbent reclamation.
It appears that a burgundy SUV was attempting to acquire fuel from the gas station and left the pump unattended which overflowed gasoline onto ground and into parking lot. It was estimated that approximately 12-25 gallons of fuel spilled onto the ground and needed reclamation.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control was requested to respond to the incident for investigation and oversight of the mitigation and reclamation efforts.
The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the closure of the parking lot from any traffic into the affected area.
Upon completion of these activities all units were permitted to return to their respective stations.
