Nature: Volunteer Firefighter Training Evolutions

Location: Delaware State Fire School – Georgetown Training Campus

On Wednesday evening, May 27th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company attended the Delaware State Fire School (DSFS) – Georgetown Campus to refine and hone their respective basic and structural firefighting skills for interior firefighters, pump operator and fire hydrant operation skills for apparatus drivers.

The initial volunteer firefighter training may seem overwhelming during one’s preliminary development.  These perpetual training mini sessions are pursued to reinforce one’s knowledge, skills and abilities.  It is an expectation for firefighters to be familiar with fire control and suppression techniques, types of building construction and burn characteristics, calculating gallons per minute (gpm) flow from a fire hydrant into an apparatus pump panel to calculate the water resource need, calculating friction loss and elevation loss with length of hose lays just to mention a few items of concern.

A firefighter is not expected to know these items at the onset, but you are expected to help where your training, experience and limitations allow.

Illustrated herewith are photographs of the evolutions pursued at the fire school training.
