Nature: House Fire

Address: 28369 Clark Ave Millsboro, DE 19966

Early Wednesday morning, October 9th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a structure fire with possible occupant entrapment on Clark Avenue in the Riverdale development off of River Road. The Lewes (82) Fire Department, Millsboro (83) Fire Company, Sussex County Paramedics, and the local emergency medical service provider were also alerted for the incident.

Emergency response units included: Engine 80-1 and Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility; Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility, 80 Incident Command from the Layton Davis Road area as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included mitigation of the interior smoke condition, positive pressure ventilation for complete eradication of the interior smoke conditions, and removal of the debris in and near the residential woodstove.

It appears that combustible materials improperly stored near the woodstove caught fire causing a significant smoke condition within the residential structure. There was minimal fire but extensive smoke conditions. All of the woodstove contents and surrounding materials were removed from the residential structure.

Indian River’s Duty Officer (Mario Street) quickly evaluated the situation and downgraded the incident alarm to a single company response with ample resources already on location and required the medical units on-scene to evaluate an occupant of the structure prior to being released.
