Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

Location: John J Williams Hwy and Banks Road, Millsboro, DE 19966

On Thursday evening, May 20th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident with reported entrapment on John J. Williams Highway in the vicinity of Banks Road.  It was reported to be a two-vehicle accident.  Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Aviation Units (Trooper 2) and ground units, as well as the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, Inc.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engines #80-3 and #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, assistance with patient stabilization, traffic control, fluid and debris recovery, and overall incident mitigation.

It appears that a blue Hyundai Sonata was awaiting to turn onto Banks Road from westbound John J. Williams Highway when a grey Chevrolet Malibu traveling eastbound struck the passenger side of the Sonata causing significant front-end damage to both vehicles.  Upon arrival of responding first responders, it was identified that no entrapment existed as a result of the accident and aviation and medic units were cancelled while responding.

The Delaware State Fire Police closed all traffic travel lanes of John J. Williams Highway pending clearing of the roadway from vehicles and debris. Local detours were provided to mitigate traffic congestion.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
