Nature: Smoke Investigation

Location: Down The Street From

Address:  27117 William Street Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Tuesday evening, May 18th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a smoke investigation that yielded an inappropriate burn incident along William Street Road.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine #80-3 and Brush #80-0 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.

Emergency response crew assignments included fire suppression, evaluation of incident pending notification of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control for potential violations of Delaware’s Burn Ban, and saturation of the area to prevent spread of the brush fire.

It appears that an adjacent property owner was burning brush, wood, debris, and other natural resources to assist with property clearance before the incident spread to a large area.  The property was not familiar with the Delaware Burn Ban Regulations.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.

The DNREC Officers are evaluating the incident.

Illustrated below is information regarding Delaware’s Burn Ban that is effective from May 1st thru September 30 and may be viewed via the following website: https://dnrec.alpha.delaware.gov/air/open-burning/residential/ and https://dnrec.alpha.delaware.gov/air/open-burning/.
