Over the past week, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company has responded a few brush or vegetation fires and offers this commentary to enhance awareness.

Brush fire season peaks in late winter and spring, and before most plants green up. Winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation can cause fires to spread out of control quickly, threatening lives, homes, and businesses.

During this time of year conditions become drier due to a large area of high pressure which sits over the east coast and reduces the amount of rain.

To prevent the spread of fires started to burn brush and debris, keep in mind the following precautions:

  • Check for local burn bans or restrictions before conducting any open burning.

  • Keep fire a minimum of 75 feet from all buildings.

  • Never use gasoline, kerosene or any other flammable liquid to start the fire.

  • Do not leave a fire unattended.

The State of Delaware does impose a statewide control burning ban is in effect starting May 1st 2021 and will cease on September 30th, 2021. There is NO open / control burning permitted during the Ozone Season (May 1-Sept. 30), with the exception of cooking fires, campfires, patio fire pits, chimenea, and ceremonial bonfires. ALL other burning must wait until after October 1.
