On Saturday, April 17th, the Indian River (80) and Good Will (18) volunteer fire companies bid farewell to Joseph M. Levan, Sr., a volunteer in the Delaware Fire Service for 50 years, 10 months, and 20 days where he served in the following capacities:  Firefighter, Second Lieutenant, Second Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief, DVFA Delegate, DVFA Alternate, Chairman of the Fund Drive Committee, and participated in many functions and committees within the county, state and regional fire service entities.

Joseph culminated his tenure in the Delaware Valley Fire Chiefs Association in 2014 by serving as its President.  Joseph was a staunch supporter of the volunteer fire service in the tri-state region and participated in many regional associations representing the fire service.

Joseph joined Goodwill Fire Company in 1970 at the age of 19 and later joined Indian River in 2001.  Joseph was awarded a Life Membership for his active participation in fire company operations and for his years of devotion and dedicated volunteer fire service.

A walk-through viewing was held from 11 AM – 1 PM on Saturday, April 17, 2021 at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Rd., Millsboro, DE.  A private funeral service was coordinated immediately after the viewing.  After the funeral service, a procession with firefighter honors was held at the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company – Station #1.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing protocols were observed and masks were worn for those in attendance of any aspect of the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Joe’s name to the Good Will Volunteer Fire Company, 401 South St., New Castle, DE 19720 or the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company -Apparatus Fund, 32628 Oak Orchard Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966.
