Water Rescue Priority - Diving Incident (shallow water) - Rehoboth Bay 

On Sunday afternoon, August 4th, the Indian River (80), Rehoboth Beach (86), Bethany Beach (70) fire companies; the Sussex County Paramedics; the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit; the DNREC – Fish & Wildlife – Marine Police; the United States Coast Guard - Indian River Inlet Squardon; and the local emergency medical providers were alerted for a water rescue priority incident.  It was reported to be a diving accident on the north side of Massey’s Landing in the Rehoboth Bay. A description of the vessel and the injured were provided.

Emergency response units included: Utility 80-08 with 80 Marine 1; Brush #80-0 with 80 Marine 2, Engine #80-5 all responded from the Long Neck facility and Rescue 80 responded from the Oak Orchard facility. The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit was airborne and the marine units from DNREC and US Coast Guard were enroute.

It appears that an adult male subject attempted to dive from a pontoon type vessel into very shallow water causing injury.

Initial arriving marine units assisted with pre-hospital emergency medical care knowing that the injured was to remain in the water stabilized pending arrival of medical personnel and resources as well as a transport vessel. Incident responders were assisted by the hovering aircraft above the coordinates of the incident location.

The Sussex County Paramedics did initiate patient care and observations while within the initial water location as well as while being transported back to the public boat ramp. 80 Marine 1 did encounter significant operational obstacles attempting to arrive at the incident location based upon the vessel weight conditions and very shallow tidal conditions; however, the injured mariner was loaded on a backboard and transported slowly to the Massey’s Landing Public Boat Ramp.

The mariner was transferred to awaiting aviation units and airlifted to nearby medical institutions.

The Massey’s Landing Public Boat Ramp and was closed to all mariner traffic and as well as pedestrian, golf carts and vehicular traffic for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police Aviation Unit landed in the parking lot of Massey’s Landing while all transport vehicles completed their respective assignments.

The Delaware State Fire Police were ordered to close down the entire Massey’s Landing Complex with the assistance of the Marine Police.

Man Injured Sunday in Diving Accident in Rehoboth Bay

A diving accident on the north side of Massey Landing in the Rehoboth bay Sunday afternoon left one man injured.

Firemen from Indian River, Rehoboth and Bethany, along with Sussex County Paramedics, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, DNREC and the Coast Guard all responded to Massey Ditch on Long Neck Road for reports of a diving accident just after 2 p.m.

No word yet on how serious his injuries are or what hospital he was taken to.

Man injured after diving into shallow water

A man was injured Aug. 4 after rescue officials say he jumped from a boat into shallow water near Massey's Landing.

The man tried to jump off a pontoon-type vessel into very shallow water, said Indian River Vol. Fire Co. officials.

The man was put on a backboard and taken out of the water where he was flown by helicopter to a medical facility.

Sussex County paramedics, marine police, the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit, and rescue workers from Indian River, Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach responded to the water rescue.
