Structure Fire / Vehicle Accident Incidents

On Thursday evening, June 27th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire was initially dispatch to assist the Rehoboth Beach (86) and Lewes (82) fire companies with a structure fire on Coastal Highway and Van Dyke Avenue in the Dewey Beach proper.

Emergency response apparatus included Engine #80-1 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility. Both units were cancelled while responding to the Rehoboth Beach incident.

While returning from the initial dispatch, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident on Phillips Branch Road and both units were assigned to respond to the incident.

Engine #80-3 responded via State Route 5 (Indian Mission Road) to Phillips Branch Road and Engine #80-1 responded via County Road 48 (Holly Mount Road) to Phillips Branch Road.

It appears that a small Mazda pick-up was traveling west on Phillips Branch Road and failed properly navigate the sharp curve and apparently crossed the center yellow lines striking a motorcyclist who was traveling east on Phillips Branch Road.

The motorcyclist did sustain injuries and was transported to nearby medical facilities for additional observation and hospital care.

The Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control measures as Phillip Branch Road was closed for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
