Nature: Vehicle Accident w/Entrapment

Location: 25061 Cannon Rd., Millsboro, DE 19966

On Friday evening, March 12^th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a vehicle accident with entrapment on Cannon Road at the intersection of Friendship Road. Additional emergency alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics, the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad, and the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit (Trooper 2). The incident was reported by a fire line officer from the Lewes Fire Department who was in the area and reported a two-vehicle accident with two patients and one trapped in a vehicle.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. 

Emergency response crew assignments included vehicle stabilization, assistance with patient stabilization where needed, preparation for extrication, and traffic control.  Rescue 80 and Engine 80-1 arrived and began extrication of the trapped driver, under the Command of Chief Klingler. Firefighters utilized Hurst Hydraulic Rescue Tools to remove the driver’s side of the vehicle, to gain access to the patient. In addition, crews utilized hydraulic rams to move areas of the dash from around the patient.

It appears that a blue Ford Escape SUV was traveling on Cannon Road when maroon Ford Focus did not remain stopped at the intersection at Friendship Road and entered into the path of the SUV causing the collision.  Under the authority of the paramedics on scene, the Aviation Unit (Trooper 2) was canceled and both patients were transported by ground to nearby medical facilities for further evaluation.

The Delaware State Fire Police closed Cannon Rd for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
