Nature: Structure Fire

Location: 453 Woodside Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Sunday, February 7, the Indian River (80), Lewes (82) and Rehoboth Beach (86) volunteer fire companies were alerted for a structure fire on Woodside Road in the Winding Creek Village.  It was originally reported as a chimney fire and then upgraded to a working alarm as well as the additional company alerts.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Ladder 80 and Tanker 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engines #80-3 and #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police.  Other ancillary alerts included the Sussex County Paramedics and the Mid Sussex Rescue Squad.

Emergency response crew assignments included fire suppression tactics on the exterior of the structure with interior crews evaluating interior second floor attic area and other crews suppressed the fireplace fire and removed the ashes.  Ladders were erected and positioned to gain access to the exterior of the house as well as the roof area.  Units from Lewes and Rehoboth Beach assisted with the tasks as well as established a manpower pool.

It appears that a fireplace fire evolved into a chimney and some damage to the residential structure.  Two fire suppression attack lines were stretched, one for the roof area and one into the attic area. Additionally, a ground ladder was placed for quick access to the roof. Firefighters were able to make a quick knock on the fire, containing it to the exterior coverings of the chimney piping. Crews from all three departments worked together to ensure there was no further extension from the fire.  All crews remained on location to assist with overhaul and clean up.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated traffic control for the duration of the incident.

The Delaware State Fire Marshal is investigating.
