Nature: Automatic Fire Alarm

Address: 34836 Long Neck Rd Millsboro, DE 19966

On Friday afternoon, May 17th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for an automatic fire alarm incident at Harry Caswell’s boat storage area on Long Neck Road adjacent from Mariner’s Cove.

Emergency response apparatus included Ladder 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine #80-3 from the Long Neck facility.

It was determined that the automatic alarm sounding was the result of a worker grinding metal near a gas can.

The sparks from the metal grindings apparently ignited the gas causing an apparent explosion while ruptured a 250 gallon oil drum and ignited an interior wall and garage doors on fire.

The fire was quickly extinguished by workers within the garage area.

Emergency response crews were to evaluate and mitigate the fire concern as well as assist with oil and fluid retention.

The Delaware State Fire Marshall’s Office and the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control as investigating the incident.
