Nature: Vehicle Accident

On Friday, January 15th, Indian River (80), the Millsboro (83) emergency medical services, the Delaware State Police, as well as the Delaware State Fire Police were alerted for a motor vehicle accident on John J Williams Hwy in the vicinity of Rust Store.  The incident was reported to involve a car striking the utility pole with a dump entangled in the overhead electrical wiring.

Emergency response units from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility and Engine 80-1 from the Long Neck facility arrived to find a passenger car that had struck a utility pole causing wires to come down and become entangled on a passing dump truck.

Emergency response crew assignments included authorization to close all traffic patterns around the designated area for the duration of the incident, vehicle stabilization where needed, notification of the utility service providers (Delmarva Power, Mediacom, Verizon, etc.) pending arrival of the electric company to disconnect the overhead wires, and patient evaluation where needed.

It appears that a black Pontiac G6 was traveling west on John J. Williams Highway and struck a utility pole and snapping in multiple pieces, causing the overhead wires to sag while a passing dump truck become entangled in the aftermath.  Some residential electrical services were also ripped from their structural placements on the residences as well. 

All vehicle occupants refused medical transport for additional observations.

The Delaware State Fire Police coordinated the closure of Route 24 until the utility service providers could take over.

The Delaware State Police are investigating.
