Nature: Firefighter Self Survival Tactics and Training Techniques

Location: Shugard Property – Station #1 – Oak Orchard

On Wednesday evening, April 24th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company hosted a fire company in-service training to familiarize its personnel with Firefighter Self Survival Tactics and Training Techniques on a recently vacated residential structure owned by the fire company.

The objective of the Firefighter Self Survival Training was to gain skills in how to get out of a bad situation. This is part of a larger set of training techniques that the fire company will be taking part in and reinforces some the basic Rapid Intervention Team principles.

Some of the instructional topics included: ground ladder operations and preparation for self extrication, if needed; familiarization with how to find your way out of a fire by following a hose line by feel only; reading the smoke and conditions inside the residential structure, preparation for ventilation, and firefighter safety.

Specific tasks activities included: buddy breathing scenarios; search and rescue evolutions; and many other activities involving self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and ladder evolutions.

The training exercises were coordinated by Mario Street, Training Officer.
