Nature: Washdown (Fuel Spill)
Location: 31368 Riverwood Rd Millsboro, DE 19966
On Wednesday, November 4th, the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company was alerted for a washdown (fuel spill) incident on Riverwood Road in the Stonewater Creek development off of Indian Mission Road. It was reported to be a diesel fuel spill.
Emergency response crews from Indian River included Rescue 80 from the Oak Orchard facility, Engine #80-1 from the Long Neck facility as well as the Delaware State Fire Police. Additional resources were requested from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control Hazardous Materials Units.
Emergency response crew assignments included fluid and debris recovery measures, establishment and installation of absorbent booms, and notification for additional hazardous material resources.
It appears that a construction materials delivery truck was attempting to delivery construction materials and ruptured their fuel tank during the delivery process which resulted in losing its entire diesel fuel capacity in the front yard and roadway surfaces. The diesel fuel did drain and contaminate the roadway surface, stormwater management system, and other ground surfaces.
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control Hazardous Materials Unit are investigating.
The Delaware State Fire Police provided traffic control assistance.
